Kent Police & Kent Crimestoppers have issued a leaflet of useful advice to Tonbridge People to reduce the risk of your bike being stolen, and information to ensure it can be traced and returned to you quickly if it is found.

Here is what it says: Protect your property

There are some simple steps you can take to significantly reduce the risk of your bike being stolen;

get a good bike lock (D locks or combination locks are best) – look for Sold Secure Ltd approved locks, or ask the bike shop for a recommendation

• always lock your bike next to something secure such as a bike rack or lamp post

secure both the frame and wheels to a secure object. Take removable fittings with you

• consider having your bike security-marked or engraved Extra security measures

Security mark your bike – it will make it easier for the police to identify it and return it to you.

Marking your property may also act as a deterrent to thieves, who do not want to be caught holding or passing on stolen items. You can mark your items by:

• Using a UV pen (available at most stationery shops) • Engraving or etching your property • Using a forensic marking solution

You should always include information that will help identify you as the owner of the property, for example, a postcode.

Keep a record of your bike's details, including the make, model and any serial numbers that may help to identify it later.

Register your bike on www.immobilise.com.

You can download the full leaflet here, (Thanks, West Kent Neighbourhood Watch), which has space for you to record details of your bike and a photograph, which will help police if it is stolen.

Don't forget we have a selection of shops in Tonbridge selling bicycles and equipment. On Bank Street we have Cycle Ops, and in Paddock Wood there is Evernden Cycles (which I have used and is very easy to park, and the staff are friendly and helpful).  Halfords also sell locks that are reasonably priced, but one reviewer on Tonbridge People reported there is nowhere to park you bike outside....
