Tonbridge residents are being urged to register for the forthcoming Police and Crime Commissioner election in just five weeks time.

Thousands of people are running the risk of not being able to vote in the election if they do not submit their canvass voter registration form.

A low turnout is expected for the November 15 election, which is the first of its kind and will decide police priorities for the county.

Those that have an intention to vote have to register their vote by October 31.

Electoral registration officer for Canterbury Colin Carmichael said: "You have to be on the electoral register if you want to have your say in the first Police and Crime Commissioner election. We estimate that 5055 people have not returned their forms yet.

"Some people wrongly assume that paying council tax means you are registered to vote. I am urging all those eligible to vote in the Canterbury district to return their form as soon as possible."

PCC candidates include Conservative Craig Mackinlay, Labour's Harriet Yeo and independent candidate Ann Barnes.
