Spare a thought for our wild birds who need a little more help in the winter months, particularly the smaller birds who are most prone to heat loss.

Visitors to ‘Merriments’ Garden Centre in Hurst Green on Saturday 30 October 2010 can help our birds and have fun while making their own bird feeder to take home and hang up in their own gardens.

This free event is being run by wild bird centre manager and wildlife expert Dan Mead.   Although the event is open to visitors of all ages Dan is expecting the event to be particularly popular among visiting families with children.

Dan said “This is an ideal opportunity for everyone to pick up tips on how to look after the wildlife and wild birds which visit our gardens.    Throughout the day we are offering advice on the right feeders and nest boxes for the size of your garden and can tell you which bird feed will attract particular birds to your own garden and how to deter squirrels from eating your bird food!

We also have tips for gardeners visiting Merriments garden shop and nursery and that is not to make their own gardens too tidy at this time of year and to leave seed heads and dead wood as these are helpful to the survival of the insects, amphibians and birds which live in our gardens.”

Visitors on 30 October can also take advantage of the special discounts and offers on many of the products stocked in the wild bird centre.

Other wildlife events in half term include a ‘birds of beginners’ talk and walk by Dan Mead on Wednesday 27 October and again on Sunday 31 October 2010.  This event is an opportunity to learn about wild birds often seen in our gardens and learn how to attract them into our own gardens.  Everyone can also see and learn about the birds we see feeding when we visit Merriments own bird hide.  10am. Duration depending on weather between 1 and 2hrs.  Advance booking please on 01580 860666.

Merriments Gardens has a plant nursery, garden and gift shop, licensed restaurant offering delicious home cooked lunches and a coffee shop.
