New alcohol figures are out, showing that generally people are drinking less, yet the number of deaths from excessive drinking is rising steadily.

Is alcohol a problem in Tonbridge?
In our region, a third of people drink more than three or four units at least one day a week, 18 per cent drink more than 6 units on at least one day a week, 17 per cent drink on five or more days of the week and only one third drinks nothing.
Surprisingly, far less is being drunk in London than elsewhere in the country.
What do you think?
Do you drink most days?
Do you think 14 units for women and 21 units for men is a sensible level?

I think also the calorific content is another thing to consider. You only need to walk round Tonbridge to see oodles of beer guts, and see local motorists with massive ones squashing themselves by the steering wheel.
Lots of people say that I look great for my age and I think eating drinking and eating well helps (bar the odd chocolaarate binge.) It does of course take will power and that is part of the challenge.
Then there is the lack of concentration. As I do sports and do lots of crafts, even just a drink can affect my concentration.
Saying that there can be emergency moments ie before making a speech for example or ideally, at work, so you can forget how awful it is:-)

ReportThere are also people who drink who don't get drunk but they are so used to drink, they don't get drunk and they wreck their body, with a nice shrunken yellow liver (saw one of those at Bodyworld). They could have about 8 pints and still not get drunk.
I think there is too much social pressure to drink, even if not to get drunk. Golf Clubs have bars etc. I think it must be hard for men not to say no.
Moderation is the key, yes but what''s wrong with healthier soft drinks like water (perhaps mixed with fresh lemon), I love tomato juice, smoothies, carrot juice, natural fruit teas, and malt drinks.... wine is a bit boring after that.

Reportgood for you! of course, you are assuming that people who drink get drunk - which is not always the case!

ReportI think if the Government banned booze in this country, there would be a riot! Personally I think it would be a good thing, we would spend a lot less money on clearing up their mess and there would be less crime. For women it would be a lot safer too.

ReportI drink about a glass of wine about twice a year. and even then, it has to be a last resort. I deliberately don't drink much and fortunately most of my friends barely drink which helps. I see the results of people drinking, ie vomiting, talking rubbish, being tied to lamposts, violence, anti social driving and vandalism. I speak to people who drink and a lot of their money goes on it. For some people, booze 'is their friend' and that's how low some people are.
People here like to conform, they are scared to be different but like to be different, it means I won't get tied to lamposts at night!
