WHAT DO TONBRIDGE AND MALLING CANDIDATES THINK OF THE MONARCHY?
By alicelander | Saturday, May 01, 2010, 12:40
I would like to know what the Tonbridge and Malling Candidates think of the monarchy.
John Stanley, Liz Simpson, Steve Dawe, David Waller and Daniel Griffiths - please tell us what you think.
Should the monarchy be abolished?
Answers on Tonbridge People please!
I personally do not. I think they are a great international mascot for our country and I think the economy would suffer as a result.
Visitors come to see our beautiful castles in Kent because of the history of the monarchy, and tourism would suffer without the Royal Family.
I'd like to know what the candidates think before I vote.

Ambassadors for our country? I don't think them swanning around in RAF helicopters to their girlfriends at tax payers' expense or denying information from the Freedom of Information Act is something our country can be proud of. This type of thing doesn't look good in the foreign press too.
I presume this means that no matter what notorious deed they get up to, they are 'great ambassadors' for our country.
Personally some of our own local Tonbridge heroes or heroines can do a better job.
The Green Party at least has a refreshing ideas, real change.

ReportI am a supporter of the British Monarchy and I oppose the disestablishment of the Church of England and I am pleased to say that this too is official UKIP policy.
The Royal Family are great ambassadors for our country and should be better supported in doing this job instead of having to suffer constant attacks by the liberal elite who hate our country and everything it stands for.
UKIP would transfer part of the Crown Estates back to the Royal Family in exchange for an end to state support and the annual media fest around Royal expenses.

And where are the other Candidates?

ReportDear Alice,
The Green Party is opposed to inherited political power. We opposed having hereditary peers in the House of Lords and we are opposed to having a monarchy with a political role. I very much agree with these policies. The current payments made to the monarchy would also seem a fruitful area for spending cuts. Tourism, visiting homes currently occupied at various parts of the year by the many members and servants of the monarchy, could continue whether we had a monarchy or not.
Yours sincerely
Steve Dawe
